Looking out our window in the moring, we did not need to discuss much, the bent ovder bushes and trees said enough, the wind was still blowing like hell! What to do? We tried to hitch-hick, hoping a pickup would have a heart for us. But, there was very little traffic and the pickups were mostly local farmers, they waved at us, kind of saying "sorry we dont go that far". After the police passed about 6 times, always having a hard look on us but never stopping, we gave up. We also tried the Greyhound Bus, which just happened to come. First the driver said:" No way, the bikes need to be packed in a box." We just stayed there close to the bus and looked sad. Then he said, after lunch he might consider. Off he went to the nearby KFC. When he came back, he was in a cheerful and yes, we were welcome. But then, we couldn´t fit the bikes into the loading compartment. Tough luck the driver said and of they were! Well, public transport in the US is something which still has potential for improvement. At least, the latest Time Magazin writes, that transportation by bus increased 2011 by 24%, compared to air travel which increased only by 2%.

A nearby car repair shop seemed idle, so we asked there whether they might get us to Santa Fe and yes. "Business is business" they said and made a good deal! Katrin was so fed up with the wind that she spontaniously decided to pay it and have a rest! A few phone calls later, the son in law turned up in a huge truck and 3 hours later we stood in cold Santa Fe. It had snowed in the mountains arround there, they are lightly white and looking beautiful.
To Santa Fe we went althoug it is a detour. Katrin wanted to visit the Georgia O´Keeffe Museum in Santa Fe and it was well worth it. Georgia O´Keeffe was a painter that fell in love wit this part of New Mexico, its barren nature full of colours and silence. She moved here and painted the dessert in the most amazing colours. What a great woman, a strong will and determination that also her pictures show.
