Quanah to Claude (157 km)

The storm approaching

Our plan was to reach Amarillo by tonight. We didn´t make it. First, again a cold front hit us with strong headwind, hail and rain. We had been warned about possible torandos and severe weather, but we decided to drive anyway. At 2 pm the front hit us, lucky enough we were close to a town and could just escape the rain having luch. After one hour all was gone, the sun out again so we continued, just the temperature had fallen more than 10 degress Celsius. But then, long waited for, but hoping it would not happen! Our first flat tire on the road. When we tried to fix it, the airpump didnt work. Really annoying. Not for Katrin, she was brave and started hitch-hicking. 5 inutes later, a nice guy stopped, loaded all our gear on his truck an brought us to the next little town, called Claude. There is just one old motel and next to it, a tire repair shop. There they made big eyes when Frank entered the shop with a bicyle but then helped to fix it. All done they didn´t even want to be paid, they enjoyed fixing a bike from someone crazy enough to do such a trip on bicycle they said.
The river waiting for water from the sky
A bigger problem was to find a place to eat. One restaurant is closed on Monday, one seemed to be closed forever and we were left with the Dairy Queen fast food. While the food was ok, the eating room looked like the inside of a cheesefactory and was as cold too. But we got food and a nice icecream to really make us feel cold.

Cozy dinner
